In the 18th century, James Ayscough began experimenting with tinted lenses in spectacles. He believed that blue or green lenses could correct specific vision impairments and improve visual acuity. However, his glasses were not particularly successful, and it was not until the 20th century that sunglasses began to be worn for both fashion and function.

In the 1920s and 1930s, sunglasses began to be worn as a fashion accessory, particularly in Hollywood, where movie stars like Greta Garbo and Cary Grant popularized the trend. At the same time, advances in lens technology, such as the development of polarized lenses, made sunglasses more effective at reducing glare and improving visibility.

During World War II, the military began to use sunglasses as a tool for pilots and soldiers, leading to further advancements in lens technology and the popularization of sunglasses as a necessary piece of equipment.

Today, sunglasses are a common accessory worn by people all over the world for both fashion and function, and the technology used in their production has advanced significantly, with many options available such as polarized, mirrored, photochromic, and transition lenses, and many different styles and designs.
